What if I told you one of the Gold Coast’s most amazing beach destinations is hiding in plain sight. If you’re looking for a day trip that combines beaches, iconic surfing location, scenic walks, lookouts, beachside food & coffee, and family-friendly attractions, it’s hard to go past Currumbin Beach on the southern Gold Coast.

I recently spent the day exploring Currumbin, and what surprised me most was how much there is to see within a relatively small area. So, grab your beach gear, Slip, Slop, Slap on the sunscreen, pack your hat and come along on a ROAD TRIP’N day trip to Currumbin Beach. How does enjoying a relaxing lunch and a cold bevvy (beverage) overlooking the ocean sound? – Read on and I’ll tell you where 😋😋😋

With world-class surf breaks, stunning coastal views, a brand-new boardwalk, iconic landmarks, several beachside café’s, Currumbin Alley surf break, the family-friendly waters of Currumbin Creek, and plenty of hidden corners to explore, this laid-back beachside gem offers more than most visitors expect.
I arrived early and found parking near the beachfront before heading straight towards the sand. The first thing that stood out was how beautiful the beach looked. The golden sand stretched in both directions, the surf was pumping, and surfers were already making the most of the clean morning conditions.

This is not a big beach, stretching about 800 metres between two big rocks – Elephant Rock, the main patrolled beach at the Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) and to the north – Currumbin Rock.
Currumbin Beach has a relaxed atmosphere compared to some of the busier Gold Coast beaches. I spent some time walking along the shoreline, there’s always time for a swim, then climbing to the lookout atop Elephant Rock for some of the most sensational views of Currumbin and the Coast.
From Elephant Rock, I made my way to Currumbin Rock exploring all the nooks and crevices along the way, then with a slight detour across the sand and around to Currumbin Creek.

One of the things that makes Currumbin unique is that you get two different beach experiences in one location. On one side you have the open ocean and surf beach, while on the other you have the calm waters of the creek.
The creek was full of activity. Families were swimming, kids playing in the shadows, and surfers taking advantage of perfectly formed waves. It’s easy to see why this is one of the most popular spots on the southern Gold Coast for locals and families. 🔥Tip: If you’re visiting with children or simply prefer calm water to ocean waves (and you still want to have a surf,) Currumbin Creek is hard to beat.

If you have mobility issues or find it difficult to walk across the sand, you can still enjoy most of what Currumbin Beach has to offer. Skip the soft sand and follow the flat, sealed pathway along The Esplanade.
This easy coastal walk offers beautiful ocean views, access to the Currumbin SLSC and cafes, Wallace Nicol Park (showers, toilets undercover gazebos) and entry points to the beach and Currumbin Creek.

The pathway seamlessly connects to the new Currumbin Boardwalk, linking some of the area’s most popular attractions. It is perfect for families, wheelchairs, prams, and anyone wanting a more relaxed alternative to walking along the beach.
I found the Boardwalk to be very easy and suitable for all fitness levels. The Boardwalk follows a path from the esplanade leading towards Currumbin Rock providing spectacular views along the way.

We stopped under one of the sheltered gazebos for a break while I took some amazing photos and watched the surfers at Currumbin Alley ride some incredible breaks. It’s an easy stroll that connects the beach, creek, surf, and stunning scenery.

A little further on, you’ll pass Currumbin Alley, one of the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing locations. Even if you are not a surfer, this is one of the best places to sit and watch the action.
What a beginner-friendly place this is, surfers of all ages lined up in the Alley waiting for waves, while learners stayed closer to shore near the creek mouth. This was easily one of the highlights of my day.

We retrace our steps back along the boardwalk, the shady gazebos are a welcome rest spot, then continuing onto Wallace Nicol Park. This park overlooks the famous Currumbin Alley surf beach, which is lifeguard patrolled between November and April.
This is a great little park for a picnic with sheltered Gazebos, under-cover seating, and BBQ’s with hot water facilities. 🔥Tip: 🚻 There are public toilets situated within the park. 🔥Tip: 🚗 Car parking is available opposite the park or along the esplanade.

Most of the park is a nature conservation area. This area is formed by a large hill (Currumbin Hill) and is covered in bushland. Climb the stairs to the top of the hill where you’ll find the Alf & Kathleen Neumann Lookout (Currumbin Hill Lookout) – accessible from Wallace Nicol Park.
📍What to Expect on the Climb:
- The Steps: There are 147 steps from the bottom to the top.
- Rest Stops: If you need a breather, there are rest seats built into the landing platforms on the way up.
- The Reward: Once you reach the top of the stairs, you’ll reach the lookout platform and what an absolute incredible view you will have overlooking Currumbin Alley, Palm Beach, and the Gold Coast skyline.
- This is easily one of the best photo opportunities in Currumbin.
After a full day exploring the beach, creek, and lookouts, I was ready for a bite to eat. One of the things I love about Currumbin is that you have plenty of options depending on your style of day trip.

If you’re after coffee, breakfast or lunch, there are a few cafes dotted along the beachfront and esplanade. For one of the best dining views on the Gold Coast, it’s hard to go past the Currumbin Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).
Sitting in the shadows of Elephant Rock overlooking the ocean, it’s the perfect spot to relax with lunch, and a cold drink while people watching, the action on the beach or surfers riding the waves. The outlook from the SLSC alone makes it worth a visit.
🔥Tip: IF you’re travelling on a budget or simply enjoy eating outdoor, pack a picnic hamper and find a shady spot overlooking the beach, or set up near the calm waters of Currumbin creek – I would recommend Wallace Nicol Park as a top spot to throw down the picnic blanket.

With plenty of time left, I headed over to Surf World Gold Coast – the museum of surfing (more info- Click Here). Surf World is a fascinating attraction that showcases the history of surfing.
We wandered amongst a huge collection of surfboards, photography, and memorabilia for ages. The displays were genuinely interesting and offered a great insight into the surf culture on the Gold Coast. Each piece telling an extraordinary story about the sport’s rich history and a journey through the evolution of surfing.

No trip to Currumbin feels complete without stopping by the famous Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (more info – click here), the location is opposite Surf World.
Once inside (entry costs are applicable), we strolled the shady pathways, coming across koalas, kangaroos, colourful birdlife and plenty of native Australian wildlife.
One of the highlights was watching the famous rainbow lorikeet feeding. Seeing hundreds of birds swooping in and landing on visitors’ arms and shoulders was an experience in itself.
The sanctuary is very relaxed and easy to explore at your own pace. Whether you’re travelling with family or simply love nature, this is a great chance to get up close to some of Australia’s most iconic animals while taking a break from the beach. 🐨🦘🌿☀️
🔥Tip: FEED the LORIKEETS 🦜
- Australia’s most colourful bird.
- Every day at 8am & 4pm, you can take part in feeding the wild lorikeets.
- Held just before the Sanctuary opens and as it closes, the feeding sits outside park hours, so no entry ticket is needed.
- It’s free to watch and get involved, with gold coin donations welcome.
- You’ll find the Lorikeet feeding arena just inside the Sanctuary’s front gates, before ticketing and check in.
