This popular Brisbane River walk follows the water’s edge alongside Kingsford Smith Drive, offering uninterrupted river views and a relaxed walking experience close to the city. Our day of exploration, we travelled Bretts Wharf (CityCat) ferry terminal to Newstead Park.

The Lores Bonney Riverwalk is a relaxed and picturesque riverside walk located in Hamilton, Brisbane, offering stunning views along the Brisbane River. This easy and family friendly well-maintained promenade follows the River beside Kingsford Smith Drive, making it one of Brisbane’s most accessible and enjoyable urban walks.

📍 Start: Bretts Wharf, Hamilton
📍 Finish: Newstead Park
📏 Distance: 2.1 km one way

Bretts Wharf Ferry Terminal

Our day started with a CityCat river journey from South Bank Parklands to the Bretts Wharf ferry terminal, the walk finishing at the entrance to Newstead Park home to the historic Newstead House – Brisbane’s oldest standing European style residence.

Lores Bonney Walk

I arrived with the river already in motion. Ferries cruising by, jet skis and their passengers zooming past heading out for their day of thrills and adventure.

Stepping onto the Lores Bonney Riverwalk, it’s clear this is one of those places where Brisbane slows down, wide open paths only for walkers and joggers, cyclists have their own dedicated lane.

Viewing Platform

The river stays close, the views stay wide as we pass Cameron Rocks Reserve, a shady heritage-listed riverside park, and the historic Cameron Rocks War Memorial. Stop here, it’s a popular spot to take a break, then follow the path to the viewing platform. đź‘€Make sure you have your camera ready to go – Enjoy the panorama📸

Cameron Rocks Reserve is a heritage-listed, small but well positioned riverside stop along the way, offering a mix of green space, undercover river viewing, fishing platform and local history. With seating and shade, this is a fantastic spot to pause for a while, appreciate the views and is a popular spot for watching ferries or casting a line.

War Memorial @ Cameron Rocks Reserve

The reserve is also home to the Hamilton War Memorial, adding a reflective element to the space and acknowledging the area’s past. Together, I found these features make Cameron Rocks Reserve a practical and scenic stopping point rather than just a place to walk through.

My walk continues towards Newstead Park. Completely flat and paved, along the way walkers can enjoy seating, water bubblers and a few shaded rest areas. Their was plenty of time to stop awhile taking in views across the Brisbane River to Bulimba.

Walking from Bretts Wharf Ferry Terminal to Newstead Park is one of Brisbane’s simplest and enjoyable Riverside walks. Following the Lores Bonney Riverwalk, this flat, well-maintained path traces the Brisbane River through Hamilton and into Newstead, delivering consistent water views, open space, and plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Brisbane River Views, CityCat’s Gliding Past, Photographer’s Heaven

The path hugs the river, the panoramas stay wide, and the city feels present without being overbearing. Boats pass by ferries come and go, the views and skyline are forever changing, and each section of the walk reveals something slightly different.

  • Passing ferries: CityCats regularly glide past, adding movement and interest
  • Wide, open path: Easy walking with room to pause or overtake
  • Urban-riverside contrast: Apartments, wharves, and greenery side by side
  • Views! Views! Views!
  • Stop at lookout points and benches to take in the river
