Brisbane for 50c: Cheap Day Trips, Free City Loop Buses & Easy Backpack Travel Ideas

Ever had that moment where you realise you’ve been living in a place full of amazing things… and barely scratched the surface?

This blog is your wake-up call – to stop waiting, get out the door and start exploring Brisbane properly. No long trips, no big budget, no complicated planning. Just a simple day built around walking, catching a bus, crossing a bridge, and discovering everything from parkland beaches and swimming pools, riverside paths to world-class museums and galleries along the way. And the best part? It’s never been easier or cheaper to do it.

Whether you’re a local just wanting to have a day trip or a visitor wishing to explore this enviable region, this blog was written with one simple purpose: to show just how easy it is to step outside, explore Brisbane like a local, and have an incredible day out without spending a fortune.

Too often we think we need to travel far to “get away,” when in reality, some of the most rewarding experiences are found in our own backyard – along riverwalks, through leafy parklands many with exceptional kid’s playgrounds and fantastic picnic areas, inside inspiring museums and galleries, and across the city’s newest bridges linking it all together.

The cooler months of the year are excellent to get out and enjoy. Southeast Queensland (which is my own patch) has so much to offer, while exploring Brisbane and surrounds will leave you mesmerized with the array of things to do. With some simple planning, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to have an excellent day out.

Brisbane City Botanic Gardens River Walk

Welcome to another little ROAD TRIP’N moment – where the journey matters as much as the destination, and the best stories start with a backpack + rough plan.

So, let’s look at a day trip and head off to Brisbane with the kids or grandkids.

Go Card

Before we set off on our local adventure, I’m loving how easy (and cheap) Brisbane (and surrounds) exploring can be right now – 50c flat fares across Translink Services (including buses and CityCats) no matter the zones. (Go-Card is the preferred payment type).

Then, to top it off, add in FREE Brisbane City Loop buses around the Brisbane CBD – no GO Card needed- perfect for hopping between Museums, Art Galleries, Riverside strolls, Gardens, Coffee stops, Shopping and whatever catches your eye. And there’s still a lovely extra perk for Senior Concession Card holders; continuing to travel free on Brisbane City Council Buses and CityCats during off-peak times.

Pack the Backpack

Plan for the day: Pack a backpack with homemade snacks, fruit, sandwiches, drinks (I take water and Popper Fruit juice type drinks for the grandkids). Remember you can buy a coffee along the way, the cost can be offset with the money you’ve saved on fares, and a couple of treats – because the cheapest meal is the one you bring, and it leaves more room for the fun bits later.

🔥Tip: Save💲If you are in the market for picnic gear, travel mugs, backpacks, just about anything, check out your Local Op shop. I’ll include a Link: The Treasure Triangle – Brisbane’s Ultimate Op Shop Day Trip, – grab some amazing bargains here.

Southbank Parklands. This is an excellent place for a day trip.👍

What you want to see & do – that’s up to you. Several Museums and Art Galleries have free general admission.  Some special exhibits & shows can have an admission charge.

Then there are places like Old Government House and MOB (Museum of Brisbane), Queensland Museum, Southbank Parklands, and the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens (including a playground and river walks) which are all free.

Electric Bus – Brisbane Metro – Turn Up & Go

Alright, Brisbane – we’re doing a local ROAD TRIP’N day out. As we often do, our two granddaughters have decided to come along. The whole point is simple: the journey is the adventure, and you don’t need a big budget to make in happen. Just grab a backpack, jump on a bus, and see where the day takes you.

Transport: 50c flat fares on Translink services (including buses + ferries like CityCats).
CBD hopping: FREE Brisbane City Loop buses (just hop on/hop off — no go card required).
Pensioner-friendly: 50c fares apply per journey, and you can pay using go card/tap methods noted by https://translink.com.au/
Budget hack: backpack packed with snacks + drinks so we’re not buying every bite on the go.

Now… where are we heading first.
