You don’t need a boat to get some fishing action. As a keen angler, I’m often asked if I have a secret place that I like to go and wet a line and even catch a fish or two. I have a number and as a land-based fisherman one of my favourites when I am on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland is Picnic Point Maroochydore, right on the Maroochy River.
Picnic Point is situated on Picnic Point Esplanade and is just the perfect spot to set up for a lovely day of fishing. Picnic Point is a fantastic stretch of public park, shaded by trees with several tables, chairs and BBQ areas dotted along the foreshore. You’ll have your choice of spots to choose from along this first-rate park. No tables available, no worries! Grab a spot under a shady tree instead. No matter how busy it gets there always seems to be plenty of room for everyone.
For an actual picnic you couldn’t get a more idyllic spot. Besides the views you also have access to electric BBQ’s, tables and seating (some undercover) and toilets. With easy access to the beach, it’s a great spot for kids or the entire family to set up for fishing and plenty of other activities right next to the Maroochy River.
Being on the river this also a great place to unload the kayaks or paddle boards or just take a dip in the cool waters of the Maroochy River. 🔥Tip: There is no patrolled beach at Picnic Point.
It’s also a great spot to take advantage of the cycle and walking paths with so many more fishing spots scattered along the foreshore for a land-based angler. The paths and tracks stretch all the way along the river to Girl Guide Park, which is also another fantastic spot to cast a line and for those with a boat you can also make good use of the launching ramp situated at the end of the Esplanade.
Fishing doesn’t need to be an expensive outing, you can purchase all the gear you need at a reasonable price from most of the major chain stores, camping and outdoor outlets or specialised bait and tackle shops. E-Bay and Gumtree can also offer some very cheap fishing gear. The two main reels that are used here South East Queensland for surf and estuary fishing include:
- Alvey side cast reel
- The Spinning reel (also known as the eggbeater)
Either of these reels can be fitted to various fishing rod lengths to suit the type of fishing environs that you are heading to. Add some bait or lures, line, sinkers, a sharp knife, swivels and hooks, pack it all together in your tackle box and your all set to go.
As an alternative if you want to hire some gear contact the local bait and tackle store where they should be able to help you out with all your needs and plenty of local advice.

If you’re staying in Marcoola Beach for a holiday break or just passing through Davos’ Tackle World (click here) conveniently located on the David Low Way in the Marcoola Village shopping precinct, can help you out.
🔥Tip: Marcoola Beach is also a great location for a beach holiday. Fishing the surf gutters can be right outside your front door and the Maroochy River north shore is only a short drive away. My Blog, The Secrets of a Sunshine Coast Getaway – Marcoola Beach ☀🏌️🏄🚴 (click here) will give you all the extra information you need.

Picnic Point Maroochydore is one of my Secret Spots, not only for fishing but also for a day out enjoying this fabulous location and all its aquatic delights. I hope you land your “catch of the day” and enjoy my Secret fishing spot as much as I do.
