Lake Macdonald

Located on the shores of Lake Macdonald, a short drive from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland town of Cooroy or a thirty-minute drive from Noosa Beach, the gardens comprise eight hectares of a mix of native and exotic plant species, including an open-air bush chapel, fern house, lily pond, large lawn areas with winding paths leading to picnic areas and a Grecian style amphitheater.

Picnic Seating Amongst the Sculptures & Gardens

Believe it or not, these beautiful gardens were originally farmland with the local council resuming the site in the late 1950’s. Earlier this site was used to dump car bodies and became an unofficial local tip until a local resident Ida Duncan approached Council to clear the site.

Amphitheatre

With the help of other locals, the area was cleared and with funding from a Government community employment programme, construction of the gardens started in 1987. The Noosa Botanic Gardens officially opened to the public in August 1990 ready to welcome visitors. The opening was just the beginning. The stunning Greek-style amphitheater, completed in1997, added even more charm to the gardens.

There’s much to see in these gardens. There are plenty of parking spaces at the entrance, then heading into the gardens there is an extensive network of tracks to explore. Each trail offers a unique experience, from tranquil rainforest walks to vibrant flower garden trails. Let’s take a journey through this botanical gem. Here are a few highlights:
