A Day at Snapper Rocks: Surfing, Beach, and Sightseeing

Here is how I spent a day at Snapper Rocks, and why you should to. Let’s start with the obvious, Snapper Rocks is a surfers Nirvana – The World Surf League (WSL) 2024 Challenger Series will kick off at Snapper Rocks April 27, 2024. The very name conjures up images of sun-kissed surfers carving up perfect waves, against a backdrop of the Gold Coast’s endless golden sandy beaches. Snapper Rocks is a popular surfing spot, the point break, forming the head of the famous Superbank, produces long consistent waves that roll in like clockwork that start at the point then continue through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount Point, Cooloongatta Beach and Kirra offering thrilling rides for all levels.

We were already holidaying in Cooloongatta – Points North Apartments – excellent location and accommodation🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟, so with an early start set out exploring the Oceanway Walk – Cooloongatta to Froggies Beach, passing by a number of Gold Coasts iconic beaches, Greenmount Beach, Rainbow Bay Beach and then around the corner past the Surf Club we came upon the famed surfing mecca Snapper Rocks.

But Snapper Rocks isn’t just for surfers. Even if you don’t “hang ten”, there’s a wealth of beauty and adventure to be found. Whether you’re chasing waves, soaking up the sun or simply seeking a dose of coastal serenity, Snapper Rocks has something for everyone. Arrive at dawn and witness surfers paddle out for the first waves or end your day watching a magical sunset with a cold beverage on the deck of the Rainbow Bay Surf Club.

We arrived fairly early in the morning just before the crowds. The sun was shining, the water was clear, and the waves were pumping. Even if you are not a surfer, you can still enjoy the spectacle of watching surfers from a number of vantage points on the shore.

Families and beach goers were starting to arrive. I wandered along the beach, past sunbathers already claiming their patches of paradise. Families built sandcastles, children played in the surf as the waves chased them along the foreshore or explored the rock pools that had formed along the shoreline. Snapper Rocks has a beautiful sandy beach, with clear water and gentle surf, I decided to stop here awhile, find a shady spot, relax on the beach, soak up some sun and enjoy the spectacle of watching the surfers from the shore while listening to the sounds of the ocean waves.

Snapper Rocks is a family-friendly destination, with life savers on patrol, a small picnic area and a walking track, Oceanway Walk, that hugs the water line around the point leading to secluded Froggies Beach, then crossing the Queensland (QLD) / New South Wales (NSW) border climbing a small boardwalk onto the breath-taking views of Point Danger. 🔥Tip: Rainbow Bay beach offers a more sheltered beach and swimming experience. 🔥Tip: There are no cafes at Snapper Rocks. Food, Drinks and facilities can be found at the Rainbow Bay Surf Club & the views (Sunsets) from the Surf Club Deck – drop dead gorgeous.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can also explore the area around Snapper Rocks. You can walk to nearby Point Danger, which marks the border between Queensland & New South Wales. There you can see the Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse, which commemorate the first sighting of the point by the explorer in 1770. You can also enjoy the panoramic views of the Ocean and Hinterland, and maybe spot some dolphins or whales.

Another option is to take the Gold Coast Oceanway, a network of paths and trails that connect the coastal suburbs of the Gold Coast. You can walk, cycle, or skate exploring the Oceanway discovering different beaches, parks, and attractions along the way. One of the most picturesque sections of the Oceanway stretches from Cooloongatta to Froggies Beach (walking tour – click here), passing by Rainbow Bay, Snapper Rocks and Froggies Beach. The Oceanway from Snapper Rocks is a must-see attraction on the southern Gold Coast, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the ocean and surf.

Snapper Rocks is a must-visit for anyone looking for a beautiful and exciting beach experience on the Gold Coast. Whether you’re a surfer seeking the perfect wave, a beach lover wanting to soak up the sun and scenery or you just like walking getting some sand between your toes while exploring little secluded beaches and rock pools, Snapper Rocks has something for everyone.
