You often hear when you are planning a road trip day out, it’s not just the destination but the journey. Well this road trip is all about the destination. Location, location, location and what a location it is – Picnic Point, Toowoomba QLD. Also, while we were there we’ll also be having a look at all things VW (Volkswagen), Dubs on The Hill, held once a year in March and promoted as the highest VW car show of its kind in Australia all set amongst the beautiful gardens and parklands of Picnic Point.
The Picnic Point Lookout and Parkland set high on the ranges west of Brisbane is a great spot for a coffee, picnic or just take in the unsurpassed views of the Great Dividing Ranges and the Lockyer Valley below. It’s also the starting point for several walks that wind their way down the escarpment and through the surrounding bushland.
As you approach the Parklands driving along tree-lined streets, you’ll be greeted by green manicured lawns with gazebos sprinkled throughout the area all great locations to spread out the picnic rug and enjoy your BYO picnic goodies. There are also plenty of free BBQ’s available for your use with clean restrooms situated nearby. Take the road behind the restaurant and you’ll find this lower section of the park is another ideal location for a picnic or BBQ.
Picnic Point playground with swings, see-saws, slippery slides, climbing stations are all set beneath shady pine trees with plenty of space for the kids to stretch out and run around. Picnic facilities are nearby it’s only a short walk from the main Parkland area.
A restaurant and café where you can order a coffee, snack or meal and eat inside or out on the deck and you’ll have all this with some of the most commanding views of Main range and the valley below.
Dubs on the Hill is a car show and family day out for all car fans and VW enthusiasts and their prized vehicles. Food trucks, hot coffee, cold drinks and snacks, a live band pumping out the tunes, plenty of places to sit and listen to the music or just take in the show, it’s worthwhile to put this one in the calendar for 2019.
New VW’s, rows and rows of restored vehicles, some in the early stages of restoration with many already completed. Sedans, Utes, beetles, combi’s all proudly on display and as a visitor you can wander around and get a very close look at these machines. In a lot of instances, the owners are very close by and are more than happy, and just a little excited, to tell you the story behind their passion.
I was fortunate enough to catch up with Phil and Patty, the owners of the beautifully restored VW combi “Charlie” who not only love to display their vehicle but also use it as a week-end drive often heading to the coast to go camping as often as possible.
If you see Phil & Patty out and about, stop and say hello and I’m sure that they will give you all the information you need to help you get on your way to own and restore your own piece of motoring history.
Summary: Picnic Point is a beautiful place for a day out or a short stop on your journey to other destinations. Toowoomba has many attractions and well worth an overnight or two stay over.
